PTSD Therapy

At Betts Psychiatric, PC, we provide PTSD therapy to individuals in order to help them restore and retain a healthier and more enjoyable life. PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is a common condition caused by prolonged trauma that leads to an instinctual fear response. In most situations, the patient’s decisions are based on how safe they are, rather than how they are interacting with others.

In other words, the patient sees everything through a “fear lens,” which can cause social isolation and an overall stressful way of living.

What is PTSD?

PTSD is the result of sustained and persistent trauma relating to not feeling safe and/or having a fear response that is constant and difficult to manage. It can be from combat situations, sexual assault, significant abuse issues, or related to natural disasters.

PTSD Symptoms

PTSD patients may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • over-exaggerated fear response
  • recurrent, distressing flashbacks and/or nightmares
  • poor self-esteem
  • significant social detachment
  • lack of the ability to establish long and fruitful relationships
  • trouble sleeping or concentrating
  • self-destructive behavior
  • depression
  • suicidal thoughts

When left untreated, PTSD can lead to substance abuse, divorce or family problems, legal troubles, and in severe cases, suicide.

How We Can Help

At Betts Psychiatric, it is our goal to intervene and help the patient recover from PTSD before it reaches a dangerous level. Some ways we can do this is by using:

  • cognitive behavioral therapy
  • interpersonal therapy
  • solution-focused therapy
  • medication management

We can also refer out for group therapy and EMDR therapy (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing).

Each patient is different when it comes to treating PTSD, and it’s truly a “whole-person” process. During our evaluations, we take careful consideration of each patient’s needs, treatment preferences, and family involvement to reach the best results possible.
